Some of the other planets have atmospheres, seasons and even water, but only Earth combines all these elements in just the right way. Earth is the only place in the solar system where life is known to be found.
What is special about the Earth?
To enable life, this most special of attributes, planet Earth has a number of ideal features. It is unique among planets in our solar system for having water in its liquid form at the surface, in an amount conducive to life evolving.

Earth, our home, is the third planet from the sun. It’s the only planet known to have an atmosphere containing free oxygen, oceans of water on its surface and, of course, life. Earth is the fifth largest of the planets in the solar system.The earth consists of rocks, minerals, soil and landforms such as mountains. The earth is also covered with water, in the form of oceans, lakes and rivers. The planet Earth is part of the solar system that circles around the sun. It is surrounded by an atmosphere with layers. Introduce the new words such as atmosphere and solar system.
Why is Earth called a unique planet?
Earth is the only planet in our solar system that has a large amount of liquid water. About 74% of the surface of Earth is covered by liquid or frozen water. Because of this, people sometimes call it “blue planet”. Because of its water, Earth is home to millions of species of plants and animals.
Named Planet Earth
The answer is, we don’t know. The name “Earth” is derived from both English and German words, ‘eor(th)e/ertha’ and ‘erde’, respectively, which mean ground. But, the handle’s creator is unknown. One interesting fact about its name: Earth is the only planet that wasn’t named after a Greek or Roman god or goddess.

Four layers of the atmosphere:
Layer 1: Weather conditions, cold at the poles
Layer 2: Airplanes travel, ozone absorbs the sun’s harmful rays
Layer 3: Meteors burn, radio waves travel
Layer 4: The area known as space
Divide the class into four groups and assign each group to work on a layer of the earth’s atmosphere, by handing each group science magazines with pictures of the related items. For example, the group that is working on the first layer, should cut out pictures and create a collage of weather related pictures. The next group should work on the second layer with airplanes, etc.

The Sun plays the major role in Earth’s weather and climate.
Climate is not the same as weather, but rather, it is the average pattern of weather for a particular region.Weather describes the short-term state of the atmosphere. The atmosphere covers the Earth. It is a thin layer of mixed gases which make up the air we breathe.
What is the difference of weather and climate?
Whereas weather refers to short-term changes in the atmosphere, climate describes what the weather is like over a long period of time in a specific area. Different regions can have different climates.
The four main attributes affecting climates are;
- The Sun
- Atmosphere pressure
- Wind currents
- The ocean
Climate is the average weather conditions in a place over a long period of time—30 years or more. And as you probably already know, there are lots of different types of climates on Earth.
For example, hot regions are normally closest to the equator. The climate is hotter there because the Sun’s light is most directly overhead at the equator. And the North and South Poles are cold because the Sun’s light and heat are least direct there.
